Battery safety and chemistry options

OSHA requires safety data sheets (SDSs) for hazardous products or chemicals and are summary documents that provide information about the hazards of a product and advice about safety precautions. Safety data sheets are important in helping to keep your workplace safe and to protect the environment. 

The four main purposes of an SDS:

1). Identification of the product and supplier
2). Hazard identification
3). Prevention
4). Response

Battery Chemistry Options

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4 ) Valve Regulated Lead Acid    Pure Lead Acid
(Non-Spillable)

- Temperature range is -40°C to 60°C

- Very lightweight - 1/3 of the weight of lead acid batteries

- Delivers approximately 2 to 2.5 times
the backup run time for equal physical size

- Delivers up to 10 or more times the
discharge-charge cycles vs. lead acid

- Retains up to 8 times the capacity
after 12 months storage at 20°C to 60°C

- Lowest life-time cost at any temperature
up to 60°C

- Excellent safety performance -
contains non-toxic materials and does
not experience thermal runaway

- Other lithium chemistries are volatile and
require expensive battery mgmt. systems (BMS)

- Temperature range -20°C to +50°C

- Low cost - inexpensive
compared to other batteries

- Durable and provides dependable service

- Unrestricted transport -
D.O.T. approved for all
land, sea and air transport

- Mature, reliable, well-understood chemistry

- Widest operating temperature range from -65°C to +80°C

- Good full-cycle capability and experiences less “dry out” failure mode from repeated recharges

- Offers a longer float life than standard lead acid

- High stable voltage delivery from low internal resistance

- Fast recharge without loss of capacity or electrolyte

- Cost is similar to lithium iron phosphate
